TRAVELLERS have been forced to carry out unpaid work for a council’s parks team after cutting up turf with their vehicles during an unauthorised encampment.
Sussex Police asked a group of travellers to return to Preston Park and do unpaid work after they caused criminal damage during an unauthorised encampment on Monday November 30.
A traveller vehicle had been driven from a concrete area within the Brighton park and driven onto grass causing “noticeable damage” due to the poor weather conditions.
The vehicle had to be towed off the grass and the group were directed to leave the site under emergency police powers and later ordered to complete unpaid work assisting the city parks team under a community resolution.
Sergeant Simon Marchant said: "We encourage travellers to keep away from city parks and will intervene should any crimes identified.
"Should any member of public witness any damaged being caused, please take note of the vehicle's registration, any descriptions of those involved and contact police on 101."
