A CUBAN artist has told how his move to Sussex inspired his surreal style, writes Sean Lewery.
Alberto Martinez Hernandez features well known Brighton and Hove landmarks in his paintings such as the station, Palace Pier and even the i360.
He was born in Cuba before he went to study at the Fine Arts Academy in Trinidad.
In 2009 he made the move to Brighton - which he claims inspired his style.
He said: “I was inspired both creatively and personally by the multiculturalism and diversity within the city, which I was not used to up to that point.
“Brighton is still a daunting place for me. I’ve been here for seven years now, and even though it feels like home, sometimes I find myself looking at places and buildings as if I’m seeing them for the first time.”
Originally an aspiring sculptor, Alberto is currently working on a new painting called Kaleidoscope.
He said: “My new project is very big; it will take about four weeks to complete. I’m looking to encapsulate the drama of living in a diverse society, focusing on a couple that represents all of these different cultures, that is why I named it Kaleidoscope.”
Alberto’s work is featured in the JAG art gallery in Madeira Drive.
