THE heartbroken family of Brianna Cambridge has told of their heartbreak and paid tribute to "one of a kind".

Brianna Cambridge, 21, kissed her boyfriend Craig Farrant goodbye and said “I love you” before tucking him up with her favourite teddy bears and leaving for her job at Gatwick at 3.30am on Monday.

An hour later she died at an icy spot where three drivers had already lost control of their vehicles that morning.

Brianna’s dad described to The Argus how every father’s worst fears were realised for him when he opened the door to leave for work and found police officers on his Seaford doorstep.

“When I heard it on the news I knew she was in that crash,” said Brianna's father Andy Cambridge, “I could just feel it.”

He had sent his daughter a series of texts asking about her journey, hoping for a reassuring reply which never came.

Yesterday, Brianna’s family paid tribute to a kind-hearted girl who helped her grandmother with the shopping every week and volunteered at her brother’s rugby club.

Her stepmother Gwen, whom Brianna called “mum”, said: “She never had a cross word to say about anything.

“She was one of the good ones, she couldn’t harm a fly. We used to call her our butterfly.”

“She was one of a kind, and she worried about other people, she just had that caring nature.

“And the messages online have been wonderful, there’s even been something from one person we met in Corfu seven years ago, but that’s the kind of person she was, she makes a mark.”

Her father said he was sure Brianna’s caring instinct was partly responsible for her tragic death.

He said: “The police said she must have seen the cars up ahead and she took evasive action.

“I can just imagine her seeing the accident and thinking ‘I can’t possibly hit them.’ “She swerved to avoid the melee and ended up losing her life because of it.”

He added that the family had been deeply moved by messages on social media.

He said: “The influx of love for her has been wonderful, when you see all these messages you just realise how popular she was.”

After studying tourism alongside social care at Lewes College, Brianna found a job to combine her interests, ferrying vulnerable people around Gatwick on a motorised buggy for handling company OCR.

Gwen explained: “She took care of people who were old, or disabled, or sometimes it was bereaved people, she’d pick them up at the gate and drive them through the airport.

“That was what she was like, she was such a caring person and she loved her job.”

Rhys Cambridge, 15, was standing with his parents when police arrived to impart the terrible news on Monday morning.

He said of his big sister: “We never really fought.

“She was always there for me, I could always talk to her about problems or whatever.

I probably talked to her more than I talked to mum and dad, because she understood what I was going through.”

Brianna’s boyfriend Craig Farrant is also living with the bereaved family, having moved in with the Cambridges last year so that he and Brianna could save up to buy a home together.

He said: “That was her big plan for 2016, to save money, and get her mobile nail beauty businesses off the ground.

“A friend used to do her nails and taught her how to do it, she was going to start her own mobile boutique.”

The pair spent a joyful Christmas together with family, and they created a scrapbook charting the highlights of their fourteen-month relationship.

Unbeknownst to Craig, Brianna took it with her everywhere.

It was in the car with her when she died; a book of happy memories with empty pages which will now never be filled.
