ON ONE of their first dates Mick fell asleep in the toilet after promising to walk Gwendoline home, but 70 years on they are happily married and still very much in love.
Mick Smith and Gwendoline Winchester first met while working at the Allen West factory in Brighton in 1941, when Mick was considered the "heartthrob of the office".
The couple married at St Andrew’s Church in Moulscoomb in 1946 and had two children, Elaine and Gary.
They courted attending dances at venues such as the Brighton Dome.
Luckily after Mick once promised to walk Gwen home and ended up falling asleep in the toilet she was happy to give him a second chance.
They have now celebrated their sapphire anniversary as Mr and Mrs Smith, 94 and 90, remain happily married living together in a retirement flat in Lancing.
Mr Smith said: "You have to keep active and we have lots of good friends close. We socialise, we are quite lucky and very happy."
