TWO fully electric cleaning vehicles have been rolled out among a council's new fleet of street cleaning vans.

Lewes District Council has unveiled its seven new street cleaning vans which councillors boast will have "improved levels of efficiency and safety compliance".

Two of the bright green vans are fully electric with an 80 mile range which can be topped up at charging points in either Lewes or Newhaven.

The vans are also more spacious, allowing them to carry more cleaning gear, and have 360 degree cameras and onboard hand washing facilities.

The vehicles replace the council's ageing fleet and will be operating in Seaford, Newhaven, Peacehaven, Telscombe and Lewes.

Councillor Paul Franklin said: "This is the start of a new fleet of vehicles for waste and recycling services that we are planning to introduce over the next 18 months."
