POLICE are investigating the cause of a fire which killed two 90-year-olds.

Firefighters were called to a bungalow in Maybush Drive, Chidham, near Chichester, just after 8.30am on Saturday.

A man and woman believed to be a husband and wife died in the blaze.

Witnesses described seeing smoke oozing from the eaves of the house.

Crews from Chichester, Emsworth and Havant were on the scene by 8.45am and called for back-up when they discovered a serious fire at the back of the house.

Firefighters who entered the house found the two occupants dead at the scene and the cause of the fire is being treated as “unexplained”.

Detective Chief Inspector Mike Ashcroft, from the Surrey and Sussex major crime team, said an investigation had been launched to try and establish the cause.

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “Our thoughts and condolences go to the family and friends of the casualties and everyone involved in this tragedy.”
