FIREFIGHTERS were forced to smash a window to rescue a child locked in a car.
A fire crew from Preston Circus was called to the Asda Hollingbury car park in Crowhurst Road just before noon today.
It is believed the child was playing with keys and locked the car. The mother stood by the car and watched as the firefighters set to work, according to eye witnesses.
The firefighters tried to unlock the car using a slim jim – a thin strip of metal – but were forced to break in to unlock the door from the inside and rescue the toddler. The crew left the scene just after 12.30.
An East Sussex Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: “Firefighters have asked us to remind parents and guardians that when they have placed their child in the car it is best not to give them your keys to play with.
“The central locking system and remote access keys that come with most modern cars makes it is easy for a child to activate the locks unintentionally meaning the parent or guardian cannot get back in to the vehicle.”
