A CLOSE friend of Janet Muller has urged detectives to re-open her case by launching a petition.

The petition, which went live on Tuesday night, has already fetched more than 650 signatures and garnered support from people living in Nigeria, Vietnam, South Africa, Netherlands Germany and the US.

Morgan Fairbairn, who was on the same event management course as Janet at the University of Brighton, was left furious by the trial and said: “I was following the trial on theargus.co.uk really closely and I just felt there are lots of questions unanswered.

“It was all a bit of a botched job.

“I can understand they were struggling because Jeffrey-Shaw wasn’t speaking, but now there are more leads and they know more.

“Police say they accept the jury’s manslaughter verdict.

“There is more they could be doing to investigate the new evidence and find the other people responsible for Janet’s death.

“I feel very strongly against the decision and they should be following these new leads.”

Christopher Raymond Jeffrey-Shaw, 28, appeared at Guildford Crown Court last week charged with murder but the jury returned a verdict of manslaughter on Monday.

Miss Fairbairn added: “I was quite angry at the time so I put the petition up because more needs to be done.

“Hopefully the police will take notice.”

Jeffrey-Shaw, of no fixed abode, will be sentenced by Lord Justice Jeremy Stuart-Smith today but, at the moment, it seems unlikely the case will be re-opened.

Detective Superintendent Adam Hibbert, head of Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team said: "Christopher Jeffrey-Shaw has been convicted of the manslaughter of Janet Muller following a six day trial at Guildford Crown Court.

“Following the conclusion of these judicial proceedings it is normal for us undertake an internal review of the investigation.

"I would like to reiterate what the senior investigating officer has already said in that any new information about the case would be reviewed and responded to accordingly.

“Our sympathies remain with Janet's family at this difficult time."
