#107 Golding

FRESH from touring the UK with Illinois indie-rockers The Orwells, Brighton’s own Golding are set to release their debut single Feel Alone next month.

The Woodingdean-born, but now London-based, indie-rock four-piece talk about their journey from “the suburbs to the big bad world”.

“A few of us knew each other at school but we properly got going at college really. We’re made up of Kipp Boucher on vocals and guitar, Liam Bemrose on the guitar, Toby Withers on the bass and Louis Ayto on drums. We started writing songs together about three years ago but it was a bit less organised back then.

“We’ve got a massive range of influences. From the classics like The Smiths, Talking Heads and Joy Division to more current bands like The Strokes and general darker guitar driven music.

“Our biggest live show so far was when we played the Electric Ballroom in Camden a while back which was pretty mental, that was about 1000 people. At a festival we played last year, we snuck way too many of our mates backstage and ended up having something of a fracas with the security. The beers we took off Bob Geldof’s rider probably didn’t help the situation either.

“Being on the road with The Orwells was pretty fun, they’re good guys and we all got on well. It was definitely an eye-opening experience going on the road with such a notoriously raucous band but it kinda just confirmed our thirst to do it.

“We’ve done a few demos before. But we’ve come to a stage now where we feel like we’ve established a sound that is a relatively big change from what we’ve done before. Feel Alone summarised that new sound for us.

“We’re all thankful for growing up in Brighton. It definitely shaped us into more creative people so I guess that’s influence within itself. There are some great bands in Brighton at the moment, and we know a lot of them personally. Being around musical minded people has really been a good thing for us.

“In the future we want more songs, more gigs and more dogs. Definitely more dogs. We’re stopping in Brighton on our tour on Thursday, March 17, but there will probably be some more impromptu stuff in Brighton before then.”

Golding play the Prince Albert, in Trafalgar Street, Brighton, on Thursday, March 17, from 7.30pm, on a bill including The Bohos, Elle Kaye and Gramercy Park. Tickets cost £4.40. Visit seetickets.com
