BACK in 1980 Brian Friel’s Translations was the first production by Field Day, the theatre company the playwright set up with actor Stephen Rea.

Set in a fictional Donegal town in 1833, it maps the effect the British army had on Ireland when they began mapping the area for Ordnance Survey.

The Anglicisation of the Irish place names begin the erosion of Irish identity in the town, and the march towards modernisation – not helped by a local girl falling for an idealistic army lieutenant, despite a language barrier.
