A TRANSIT van blaze caused hold-ups on the A23 earlier as fire crews tackled it.
Fire crews were called to reports of a van on fire at 11.10am today.
The road was closed both ways, leading to queueing traffic between the B2115 (Warninglid) and B2110 (Handcross).
The northbound carriageway was closed because of the fire, with traffic being held up on the southbound carriageway. Police were in attendance.
A spokeswoman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue said three fire engines were sent to the scene.
She said: "We used two sets of breathing apparatus and two hose reels to extinguish it."
The fire engines came from Crawley, Haywards Heath and, over the border in Surrey, from Reigate.
A police spokesman added: "A van was reported to have caught fire and was well alight.
"Both north and southbound carriageways were closed while emergency services dealt with the incident.
"No one was reported to have been injured."
The road was reopened southbound at about noon with one lane reopening northbound initially.
Traffic tailbacks are reported to be three miles long.
