A pedestrian has died after being hit by a car on the A23.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the A23 Pease Pottage Hill at the junction of Tilgate Drive, close to the K2 Leisure Centre, at 3.13pm.

An air ambulance attended, but the man was sadly declared dead at the scene.

The victim is a 30-year-old local man who was struck by a dark coloured hatchback.

The driver of the car involved was taken to the East Surrey Hospital suffering from minor injuries and shock.

There has been significant disruption to traffic in the area and the road remained closed at 5.30pm as the incident continued to be dealt with.

A short section of the road was re-opened to allow workers from an adjacent office block to leave, but it is anticipated that it will remain closed well into the evening.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.ukor call 101 quoting Operation Raglan.

“Metrobus, the bus company, has been informed and enquiries are ongoing.”

Metrobus had one bus stuck in the car park of the leisure centre for about an hour, and a spokesman for the company said: “The police informed us that we could not run our buses through the area, but that’s the extent of our involvement.”
