NEW players are being invited to try their hand at a fast paced and sometimes ferocious sport which is gaining in popularity.

Roller derby is being described by organisers of an open day as the UK's fastest growing sport with players racing around a track on quad roller skates.

The Eastbourne team - covering most of East Sussex, including Lewes and Hastings - is said to have one of the most open and friendly leagues in the UK, with men, women, juniors and co-ed (men and women mixed teams) all joining in under the banner of Eastbourne Roller Derby.

Skater Phil Hobden said: "We are known throughout Europe for hosting the world's largest and best outdoor Roller Derby event as part of Eastbourne Extreme each year, which regally attracts high level skaters and officials from all over the UK and Europe.

"Just over two years ago, at the age of 37, I started having never done any sport or skated in my life. I now play for both the men and co-ed team.

"Our coaches cater for all levels and within just 13 weeks (but often sooner) most people are ready to pass their minimum skills and skate for the team.

"Derby is also a great way to meet new people - Eastbourne alone has bankers, electricians, plumbers, designers, marketing managers, engineers, students, teachers, medical staff and carers in their ranks.

"It's social, gets you fit and teaches you a great sport."

Twice a year the league opens its doors to potential new skaters, referees and officials (non-skaters).

An Open Day will be held on Sunday, May 8 at the Causeway School, Larkspur Drive, Eastbourne, starting at 2.30pm until 5.30pm.

Phil said: "The new skater intake is open to anyone for levels aged eight and upwards and 18 upwards for senior men's and women's, whether you have ever strapped on a pair of skates or not.

"The Open Day will give people a chance to get up on skates with loan kit available, you can watch a few 'Jams' and see if this is a sport for you, all in a friendly and relaxed environment with a great bunch of skaters."
