HOURLY parking charges will double in residential streets in a bid to control parking ahead of the opening of the i360.

Parking charges in the Brunswick area of Hove will change from Tuesday with motorists having to pay £2 for one hour, £3 for two hours and £4 for four hours.

The charges are a rise on the current prices of £1 for one hour, £2 for two hour and £3.20 for four hours.

Council officers said the increases were brought in following requests by permit-holding residents who complained they could not park near their homes and were worried this would worsen with the opening of the i360 this summer.

Other parking tariffs in the city, including 25 per cent rises in some city car parks and 15 per cent increase along Madeira Drive, changed in April but the Brunswick changes were dependent on a new traffic order to create a Brunswick tariff band which has now been agreed.

The council said that new charges were designed to reduce congestion, improve air quality and encourage alternative transport uses than the car.

Council officers said that prices were being dropped in less popular areas and car parks to encourage drivers to walk the last bit of the journey and take pressure off the busy central roads.
