A WOMAN has died after her car crashed into a tree.

Emergency services were called to the A27 outside Park Farm at 12.19pm, where a black VW Passat estate car had left the road and collided with a tree.

The driver, a 79-year-old woman from Arundel, was declared dead at the scene.

An ambulance spokesman told The Argus: "Sadly, one person, a woman, has died at the scene."

A spokeswoman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue said: "One female was released by crews at the scene using hydraulic rescue equipment and crews were assisting paramedics."

The crews spent more than an hour at the scene. CPR was attempted on the woman in a bid to save her.

The A27 was closed both ways near the White Swan Hotel following the accident but is now open again. A diversion was set up via the A284 and A29.
