A FIGHT broke out on a train heading towards Sussex following a high-profile rugby match.

The altercation happened on a Southern train between Clapham Junction and Sanderstead in South London, ultimately travelling towards East Grinstead.

PC Mike Botterill of British Transport Police (BTP) said: “A fight took place on the service involving a number of people, after a group of men boarded a train at Clapham Junction late on a Saturday evening.

“As they reached East Croydon, the pair left the train before running up the platform and getting back on board and resuming the fight.”

Since the fight happened, at 11.30pm on Saturday, April 16, officers have spoken to witnesses and viewed CCTV from the train, releasing these two images of men they want to speak to.

PC Botterill added: “We want to speak to both of the men in these stills as we believe they will have important information that can help us establish what took place. It is possible they were returning from watching a Saracens v Harlequins rugby match at Wembley earlier in the day.

“We are also very keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the fight, or who may have been injured as a result.”

Anyone with information should contact BTP on 0800 40 50 40 or text 61016 quoting reference 297 of 18/05/16.

Two men have already been arrested on suspicion of affray in relation to this offence. A 50-year-old man and a 21-year-old man, both from East Grinstead, were released on bail until June 6 and 7 respectively.
