THE Queen served it to President Obama and the Chinese premier, Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne was served it in Hollywood and Prime Minister David Cameron “very much likes it”.

Now Sussex’s own Ridgeview Wine Estate is raising a glass in celebration after being chosen as one of two official suppliers for No 10 Downing Street.

Its sparkling wines will be served at receptions at the prime minister’s official residence in London along with wine from Chapel Down in Kent. Champagne has been shown the door.

“The UK is home to many iconic food and drink products recognised and enjoyed across Europe. Now English sparkling wine, which has beaten Champagne in competitions, is among them,” said No 10, which described Ditchling-based Ridgeview as “fantastic British companies”.

Tamara Roberts, Ridgeview’s CEO, said the company is “delighted”. “It illustrates the support of government for the incredible quality, breadth and depth of the British food and drink industry,” she said.

Ridgeview’s sales and marketing manager Mardi Roberts met Mr Cameron at No 10 earlier this month when Ridgeview showed its wines at a Food is Great launch event to showcase best food and drink, also attended by The Argus.

“He told us that our wine will be served at all receptions there. He was really thrilled with the quality of our product. He very much likes the wine – he very much enjoyed it. And Elizabeth Truss, the minister for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, was also there and she said she was taking a bottle of Ridgeview wine home with her to enjoy that evening.”

She added: “I have never met the Queen but the Royal Family has been really supportive too. They massively enjoy the wines.”

Celebrated chef Tom Kerridge, whose Buckinghamshire restaurant The Hand and Flowers holds two Michelin stars, said: “I have Ridgeview at my restaurants and it really is up there with the best in the world. The standard of English sparkling wine is fantastic.”

In 2011, Ridgeview’s 2004 Cuvee Merret Fitzrovia Rose was on the menu at the official opening banquet at Buckingham Palace for US President Barack Obama’s state visit.

Last year, its Grosvenor Blanc de Blanc 2009 was served at a state banquet held by the Queen at Buckingham Palace for the state visit of Chinese premier Xi Jinping.

And in March, Ridgeview English sparkling wine was served at a reception for British Oscar nominees, including Eddie Redmayne and James Corden in West Hollywood, Los Angeles.

Ridgeview is currently on “a mission” to export its wines to the US, Scandinavia, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong. Tamara Roberts recently visited New York to showcase its wines, with one reviewer described Ridgeview’s wines as “very lovely and intriguing”.

Mardi Roberts said: “We see the future as exporting to sustain the market.”
