A CABARET show recreating the bohemian world of 19th-century Paris takes place in a church of the same era.

Bouffe, a Brighton Fringe show that starts on Wednesday, tells the story of a Parisian cafe singer who introduces a provincial actress, Hortense Schneider, to the composer Jacques Offenbach.

It takes over the Church of the Annunciation in Washington Street, Brighton.

With the music of Offenbach, Donizetti and Martini, the piece enters a world where newcomers from the provinces dine with aristocrats and rich patrons pay for performances both on and offstage.

Organisers say the play "recreates the energy and excitement of Offenbach’s scurrilous and irreverent early operettas" and charts the rise of Schneider, Paris’s most famous diva and courtesan.

Bouffe runs from June 1 to 4, starting at 7.30pm.
