SUSSEX Police's new second-in-command has started work.

Bernie O'Reilly, 46, left his job as assistant chief constable at Staffordshire police to take up the deputy chief constable role in Sussex.

Speaking on his first day today (Monday), he said: "I feel very privileged and excited about my new role in a force that has a fantastic national reputation.

"Having spent a few days with Sussex Police already, I have been impressed by the attitude and dedication of the staff and officers."

Mr O'Reilly worked for Staffordshire police since becoming in officer in 1989.

As divisional commander for the north of Staffordshire, he was responsible for the policing of Stoke City and Port Vale football clubs.

In Sussex he fills the post left vacant by Olivia Pinkney when she was appointed chief constable at Hampshire police earlier this year.

Chief Constable Giles York said: "I’m really pleased to welcome Bernie as DCC.

"He comes with a great reputation, is passionate about policing, has a wealth of operational experience, and will bring fresh eyes to the force."

Mr York thanked temporary Deputy Chief Constable Robin Smith, who is leaving Sussex Police after 30 years to take up the same role in Surrey Police.

Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne said of Mr O'Reilly: "His previous knowledge of diverse communities and clear commitment to successful partnership working will be a great asset for Sussex Police."
