"THE most wonderful place to be at the start of summer for me is the beach."

That is what the season means for Brighton baking queen Kate Henry.

The Great British Bake Off contestant was describing her favourite scene to photograph come as The Argus launches its One Summer's Day competition.

Kate said: "My favourite time is just before the sun sets, the sea takes on an iridescent quality that fills me with this weirdly joyful sensation.

"The view behaves like a reset button and all the craziness of life settles back into perspective once again.

"By that time of the evening, especially on a Sunday evening, lots of the tourists are wearily wandering back up Queen's Road to the station for their journey home, and Brighton empties out, leaving the lucky locals with the very best bits of our beautiful city."

We have chosen Saturday as the day to suggest people to grab a camera and capture a moment which reflects what Sussex and summer means to them.

Bestselling author Peter James has also told how the beach is the epitome of summer for him.

He said: "I can just see the ribbons of smoke rising up in the air from the beach barbecues and there is this extraordinary mixture of the wonderful smell of the sea and the charcoal burning. It's a really happy time of year."

Yesterday we heard from Brighton and Hove councillor for tourism Alan Robins, Argus head of content Lucy Pearce and North Laine Traders Association chairman David Sewell on what they picked as their favourite image of summer.

Allotments, barbecues, Brighton seafront, the North Laine and the Ashdown Forest were among the suggestions put forward as potential scenes for the contest.

The competition, sponsored by photography experts Jessops, is open to amateur and professional photographers.
