A PARLIAMENTARY committee meeting to question train bosses over services has been put on hold in the wake of the referendum result.

The vote to leave the European Union has meant the Transport Select Committee will no longer meet today as planned, it is understood.

Executives from Govia Thameslink Railway - which runs Southern as well as Gatwick Express and Thameslink services – were due to appear in front of the group of 11 MPs, including the member for Bexhill and Battle Huw Merriman, amid its enquiry on improving rail passenger experience.

Last week Lewes MP Maria Caulfield had welcomed the news and asked complaints from constituents form part of the evidence presented during the hearing.

But the company insisted this was not to answer questions about industrial action and disruption to services.

A spokesman said: “This meeting has been planned for many weeks to discuss improving the rail experience and there will be representatives from Virgin Trains, Network Rail, the Association of Train Operating Companies as well as Govia Thameslink Railway for an hour, followed by a discussion with rail minister Claire Perry."

The news followed more strikes by Southern conductors last week and continued cancellations today which the company is blaming on staff shortages.
