ENTRIES have been flying in for our One Summer's Day photography competition.

Everything from the moment just before a storm hits Patcham and showjumping at Hickstead to wildlife and flowers were snapped by Argus readers on Saturday.

More than 80 entries to the contest which urged anyone to grab their camera and capture a snapshot of summer in Sussex were received in the first day.

And there is still time for photographers old and new to send in their pictures to The Argus and enter the competition for awards and prizes.

Lisa Newton sent in a picture of poppies in full bloom in Hanover and a Brighton shopper marching with purpose towards the clock tower and Churchill Square underneath the cloak of an umbrella.

Angie Jack captured the cloud movement along Hove seafront as waves lapped the shore while Hannah Kenyon entered a series of photos taken during a trip to Herstmonceux Castle, including a great close up of a bee on a plant.

Janet Levett managed to capture a thunder storm rumbling across the sea towards her while she was out on a walk near her home in Lancing.

The 62-year-old said: "I was walking with my husband along the South Downs just behind Lancing Clump when I took this picture looking towards Sompting. We were aiming for the Poppy fields at Steep Down Hill when we heard the thunder rolling towards us. I managed to capture this picture of the nice landscape and the sky before we legged it to the car just in time. I produced it in black and white as I think it looked more dramatic."

Last week Brighton celebrities told of their favourite places to picture and readers were given tips by Argus picture editor Allan Hutchings.

We also heard from Brighton and Hove councillor for tourism Alan Robins, Argus head of content Lucy Pearce and North Laine Traders Association chairman David Sewell on what they picked as their favourite image of summer.

Allotments, barbecues, Brighton seafront, the North Laine and the Ashdown Forest were among the suggestions put forward as potential scenes for the contest.

The competition, sponsored by photography experts Jessops, is open to amateur and professional photographers.

There are first, second and third place prizes worth a combined total of £2,500 for adults and a junior prize for those under 16.

The first place picture will win the latest camera technology from Jessops in the form of an Olympus Pen-F camera worth £1,000.

Runners-up can win Jessops Academy courses, printed canvases and hardware.

How you can enter

ANYONE can enter our One Summer’s Day photography competition – whether you are a seasoned professional or a keen amateur.
All the pictures have to be taken on the same day: Saturday, June 25. We are interested in pictures with people in them but, ultimately, they should capture what a summer’s day means to you. Even if it was raining, do not be deterred.
There are first, second and third place prizes for adults and a junior prize for those under 16.
Pictures should be sent by email to onesummersday@theargus.co.uk. All entries need to be sent in as medium-sized jpeg files – no GIF, PNG, TIFF or RAW files please.
