DESIGNS have been revealed for a new beachfront cafe.

Two artist’s impressions of competing ideas for a new cafe at Beach Green in Shoreham Beach are being put forward for public consultation.

Following the Shoreham Beach Neighbourhood Forum’s “Have Your Say” event earlier this year, developer Wilbos Restaurants Ltd and Brighton architectural practice CDMS have been developing two concept designs for the site.

The two visions, one with cladding and the other with vertical 'louvers' are based on feedback received from residents at the discussion event and online, along with feedback from councillors and the members of the Shoreham Beach Residents Association.

The orange coloured design (Option 1, pictured) is not traditional weatherboarding, but instead pre-oxidised (i.e. rusted) steel cladding - which architects are proposing as it reflects the construction of coastal groynes, weathering of steel in a marine environment, and shoreham port.

The other design features "vertical louvers" to act as both a shade from the sun, and also a buffer from the wind.

The aim of the forthcoming consultation event, to be held at Shoreham Beach Primary School on Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 of July is to meet residents, discuss the concept designs, and obtain feedback.

As a result of the meeting a single design will be developed forward towards a planning application. Visitors will be encouraged to leave their comments on which design, or aspects of either design, they prefer.

Corin Morton, Director of CDMS Architects, said: “The two designs both focus on the redevelopment of the public toilet block area of Beach Green, alongside some suggestions for landscaping improvements to the beach road, which is currently a pedestrian and cycle route in poor condition.

“Both designs feature a cafe with internal and external seating areas, public WCs and a community space, however they vary in terms of style and building form.

“Both designs also look to embrace and engage with the local nature reserve that is Shoreham Beach.”

Mr Morton said presenting two concept design options will allow residents to input at an early stage in the design process and influence how the design for the cafe and community facility moves forward.

He said he wanted the final design to reflect as much as possible the needs and wants of the local community.

The consultations will run from 3:30-8pm on both days and refreshments will be available.
