SCHOOLCHILDREN tore up the racing track as they took part in a mini grand prix.

The annual event in Uckfield involved 20 primary schools and more than 200 children.

Twenty-two battery-powered cars had been built from kits supplied to the schools and decorated by the pupils.

A parade lap was followed racing in earnest with each head involving four drivers competing with each other around the course.

Each driver, aged 10 or 11, raced two laps before pulling into the pits to hand over to a team-mate.

After more than four hours of racing, Rocks Park Primary School won the final, followed by Nutley Primary School and High Hurstwood Primary School.

The grand prix, organised by Uckfield Rotary Club and Uckfield Community Technology College, is a regular feature of the popular Uckfield Festival and took place last Sunday.

It is held at TR Fastening Car Park on the town’s Bellbrook industrial estate.

Rotarians acted as pit stewards, sold ice-creams and helped build and take down the course.

College staff and students staffed various points around the track.
