A PAIR of popular hairdressers have joined forces to launch a high-end salon with a difference in Preston Circus.

Renowned stylist Jack Bayne, previously of Vidal Sasson and Simon Webster Hair, is behind Japonica.

The creative director is joined by senior stylist and head of colour Anne Lazarus, who honed her skills at Vidal Sassoon and Wella studios.

Opening in up-and-coming New England Road, the salon aims for a botanical and meditative atmosphere, rather than busy and noisy.

It is filled with cushions, orchids and plants inspired by ancient Japan, with a back garden for clients waiting for their dye to develop.

All of the salon’s products are natural, sustainable and made without animal testing.

Jack has worked in several high-end salons in Brighton over his 20 year career but this is his first time in charge.

He said: “It’s taken me a while to open my own salon. But I’m loving running my own business and I’m happy to report that our little team have landed and relaxed into how a working environment should be.

"I have no doubt that the salon will take off and people will love the whole Japonica experience.

"We’re hitting back at that uncomfortable feeling of going to the hair dressers and not enjoying the experience or getting what you want.”

He added: “I’m extremely happy to be working with Anne. We work really closely together on cut and colour. She’s an awesome hair cutter at a senior stylist level and, as Japonica’s master colourist, she’s in charge of all colour training and standards. This will be a key role as the business takes on additional freelance stylists as word gets out about the salon.”

Anne, who is passionate about the salon’s natural hair care products, added: “A lot of people in Brighton really embrace natural living and want to support businesses that use eco-friendly products. We’re proud to be one of these businesses.”

Japonica offers discounts to NHS staff, artists, students and musicians as well as staff at local businesses.
