THESE stunning pictures were all taken on one summer’s day in June – and they are all winners.

The Argus’s One Summer’s Day photography competition asked people to grab a camera and capture a moment that reflects what Sussex and summer means to them.

With more than 80 entries received on the first day of the competition alone, your pictures continued to fly in.

And these are the winning results. First in the adults’ section is the moment a storm gathers over Patcham, just as a deluge is about to begin. The picture was taken by Mike Clayton, who is retired and lives in Hollingbury.

“It’s a great feeling to win,” said Mr Cayton, 74, who shot the image on his Nikon camera. “My interest in photography began when I was in my 20s and in the RAF, and I enjoy the feeling of satisfaction of having achieved something when I take a good picture.

“I always say you can give 10 people exactly the same equipment and only one will shine because they see things that others don’t see.”

Second is a picture by Alan Purton, from Brighton, who snapped “a girl on Brighton beach, gazing out to sea, by the pier”.

Mr Purton, 59, who owns a construction firm and is often out at sea in his two boats, said: “I’m well pleased. The girl is actually my 28-year-old daughter Amy. We were enjoying a day by the sea – being tourists in our own town – and I just took the picture. Amy says the best shots are taken from behind as they give a hint of mystery. She’ll be really chuffed the picture has come second.”

Third place goes to Phil Sutters, from Seaford, who captured an image of a hoverfly on a dog-rose in the Ouse Estuary Nature Reserve in Newhaven. “I’m delighted to have come third,” said Mr Sutters, who is retired and prints his pictures on cards to sell for chariy. “I thought most people would send in pictures of people enjoying the day but I thought I send in one of a little bug enjoying the day.

“I take pictures of many things – I inherited from my dad an interest in railways so they feature a lot.”

The junior prize goes to Caitlin Richards, 14, who lives in Woodingdean. The Cardinal Newman School pupil snapped her neighbour’s two cats George, the ginger one, and Micky relaxing in the two gardens. “It’s really good to win,” said Caitlin, who plans to study photography GCSE from this autumn. “I’m always taking pictures on my phone – I love it.”

Argus editor Mike Gilson who was part of the judging panel said: ”Wow what a difficult task that was. We had hundreds of entries and the standard was incredible.

“From fantastic landscapes to fun barbecue pictures, the competition really did show Sussex at its best.

“The day itself was both rain lashed and sometimes sunny and that was captured in the winning pictures.

“We will be including these and many others in a special One Summer’s Day supplement next month.

“Well done to everyone who took part.”

The competition is sponsored by photography experts Jessops and the first, second and third place prizes are worth a combined total of £2,500 for adults, with a prize for the junior winner.

The first place picture wins the latest camera technology from Jessops in the form of an Olympus Pen-F camera worth £1,000. Runners-up win Jessops Academy courses, printed canvases and hardware.
