DRESSAGE star Fiona Bigwood was celebrating last night after winning a silver medal.

The 40-year-old, alongside Charlotte Dujardin, Carl Hester, Fiona Bigwood and Spencer Wilton came second in the team dressage.

It made Team GB's seventh silver medal in the Olympic Games so far.

The Horsham-based rider has one of the most inspiring stories of athletes at the games in Brazil at the moment.

Her career almost ended little over two years ago when she was riding her horse Sir Donato in April 2014, she told The Argus last month.

The nine-year-old gelding was talented but inexperienced. In particular he was nervous around other horses.

The mother-of-three said: "I had my line, and that was clear, but then another horse came into his path and he got scared and fell over.

"I banged my head on the ground, I was knocked out. I don’t remember much of it but I came to in hospital and people kept going on about my vision."

She had a fractured skull and couldn't see properly out of her right eye. She had suffered major nerve damage which had caused severe visual impairment.

Despite all this she has won in a sport which relies on accuracy and precision. She had no guarantee her vision would fully improve and was written off by those in the sport but never gave up and instead made do with what she had and wore an eye patch.
