A YOUNG footballer who narrowly missed out on being named 2015’s Young Sports Star of the year has once again been nominated for the same Argus Community Stars Award.

Eight-year old Blaze Gerrard Brown - named after Liverpool star Steven - from Woodingdean has put the ball in the back of the net 188 times in the last two seasons.

Blaze was invited to play in a tournament at Brighton and Hove Albion’s training ground last year was also invited to Chelsea Football Club’s academy in Crawley.

His performances for the Woodingdean Youth Blue teams which have caught the eye of football scouts from both the Albion and Chelsea, are not the only string to the young sportsman’s bow.

Derek Coom wrote in to tell the Argus: “The dedication this boy has is absolutely amazing. He trains every day because he wants to, but also decided to run the mini mile for cancer research earlier this year.”

Blaze raised £70 from his run.

His mother Zoe said that after Blaze appeared in The Argus last year the family was contacted by a Dutch sporting goods company which provided him with equipment free of charge, and filmed a YouTube video of him training.

After 97 goals in his first season he scored a further 91 last year in just 16 games at an average of almost six per match.

His mother Zoe told The Argus: “Watching him scoring goals and do well makes me so proud.”
