THE police watchdog is investigating the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) over an allegation that she lied on social media during her re-election campaign.

A member of the public has complained that PCC Katy Bourne posted on Facebook during the campaign that she had not claimed expenses during her term, yet, according to the complaint, she had in fact claimed £385.

It was referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission by Sussex’s Police and Crime Panel, and today the watchdog said it would investigate whether Mrs Bourne had broken the Representation of the Peoples Act 1983.

IPCC Deputy Chair Sarah Green said: “As Mrs Bourne is a Police and Crime Commissioner, the IPCC will investigate whether she made a false statement during the 2016 election regarding her expenses while serving as the PCC.

“On completion of the investigation we will decide whether any matters should be referred to the Crown Prosecution Service for its consideration.”

Yesterday a spokesperson for the Office of the Sussex PCC said it was aware of the IPCC’s investigation and was co-operating fully.

He added: “It would be inappropriate to comment further until the investigation is concluded.”

Mrs Bourne said: “I am committed to maximum transparency in all public office roles and welcome the independent assessment of the IPCC.”

PCCs are only referred to the IPCC when there is an indication of a possible criminal offence. The IPCC then decides whether to investigate.
