A BRIDE will have to spend her wedding day in plaster after a remote controlled car tripped her up while she was exercising in a park.

Emily Johnson went under the knife on Wednesday to have screws and plates inserted into her leg after it was broken in three places snapping her ligament in the process.

The 21-year-old beautician will go up the aisle in less than a fortnight on crutches and may have to sit during her ceremony on Saturday September 10.

Her fiancé Sudi Patel said the couple, who have been together for more than four years, had been forced to cancel their honeymoon to Morocco and could lose out on hundreds of pounds.

Sussex Police are now investigating the incident in St Johns Park in Burgess Hill on Monday night.

Miss Johnson was exercising with Ultimate Outdoor Training, who run regular courses in the public park, at around 7.15pm last Monday.

Emma Tasker, who runs the class, said a petrol driven remote controlled car driven by a man in his 40s began becoming a nuisance throughout the second class.

The car was driven into Miss Johnson as she was running causing her to fall to the ground.

Her classmates were able to lift her to a nearby bench and apply ice and she was then helped into a car by her training partners, fiancé and father before being driven to hospital where she received the bad news.

Mr Patel, 29, said: “I got a call on Monday night and Emily was in floods of tears, she said ‘I think I broke my leg’.

“I usually go to Ultimate with her but with the wedding coming up Emily has been going four times a week.

“Emily is a very positive person.

“Before the operation, she was very positive about the wedding and looking forward to the wedding.

“After the operation she has become more down about the situation I think as the shock has worn off.

“We want it to go as normal as possible but of course there are going to be some restrictions as she will have to go down the aisle on her crutches and she might have to sit during the ceremony.”

Mr Patel has called for criminal action to be taken against the man driving the petrol driven car saying the behaviour was “simply unacceptable”.

Sussex Police said they were called to St John's Park in London Road at 8.05pm to a report a woman had been hit several times by a remote control vehicle.

Anyone who saw what happened is asked to contact police on 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting serial 1385 of August 23.

Eyewitnesses describe the man responsible as aged in his 40s, “scruffy looking”, wearing a long black coat and pushing a red pram with a child.
