A LIFEBOAT station was kept busy over a hot spell of weather with four calls in three days.

Crews at the RNLI base in Shoreham were paged and launched twice on Saturday over fears of people in trouble in the sea.

The first call at about 2am was a report of white lights in the water believed to be a lifejacket, a quarter of a mile west of Worthing Pier.

The lifeboat crew found the lights to be coming from a small fishing tender.

That evening, at 8.40pm, there was a report of a swimmer in trouble near Carats Cafe at Southwick. After a search, crews established the swimmer had come ashore OK.

On Friday (August 26) at 5.15pm, a lifeboat was launched to a report of a person in difficulty in the water off Widewater, Lancing. But as it raced to the scene, it became clear the experienced swimmer was waving to his friend on the shore. All calls were good intent.

At about the same time the day before, a crew towed in a broken-down angling boat four miles off Hove (pictured).

The 68ft boat with two people on board was spotted on the lifeboat’s radar.

Coxswain Steve Smith said: “It has been a busy few days for us during the hot spell of weather. Three of the calls were good intent and all turned out to be well.”
