THE talented winners of The Argus’s One Summer’s Day competition gathered for a special ceremony to receive their prizes.

The quartet met The Argus editor Mike Gilson and Jessops manager Jake Stone at the branch in North Street, Brighton, for the event.

Each winner picked up a large canvas print of their photos along with specialist photographic equipment.

The competition asked people to grab a camera and capture a moment on June 25 that reflected what Sussex and summer meant to them.

First in the adults’ section was the moment a storm gathered over Patcham, just as a deluge was about to begin.

The picture was taken by Mike Clayton, 74, who is retired and lives in Hollingbury, Brighton.

At the time of the win he told The Argus: “My interest in photography began when I was in my 20s and in the RAF and I enjoy the feeling of satisfaction of having achieved something when I take a good picture.

“I always say you can give 10 people exactly the same equipment and only one will shine because they see things that others don’t see.”

Runner up was a picture by Alan Purton, from Brighton, who took a picture of his 28-year-old daughter Amy gazing out to sea by the pier as they spent a day out being “tourists in their own town”.

Third place went to Phil Sutters, from Seaford, who captured an image of a hoverfly on a dog-rose in the Ouse Estuary Nature Reserve in Newhaven.

Mr Sutters is retired and prints his pictures on cards to sell for charity.

The winner of the junior prize was Caitlin Richards, 14, from Woodingdean, Brighton.

Cardinal Newman School pupil took a picture of her neighbour’s two cats George and Micky relaxing in the two gardens.

Mr Gilson said: “I was delighted to present everyone with their well-deserved prizes.

“Judging was a really difficult task and the standard was amazing.

“Congratulations to the winners and well done to everyone who took part.”

The competition was sponsored by photography experts Jessops and the first, second and third place prizes are worth a combined total of £2,500 for adults, with a prize for the junior winner.

The first place picture wins the latest camera technology from Jessops in the form of an Olympus Pen-F camera worth £1,000.

Runners-up win Jessops Academy courses, printed canvases and hardware.

A spokesman from Jessops said: “We have really enjoyed working with The Argus to find the best new talent in Brighton. One summers day brought the city together through its love of photography – and proved that you don’t need to be a professional to have an eye for a great photo. The standard was very impressive and we want to take this opportunity to congratulate the winners and runners up.”

A special One Summer’s Day supplement is due to be published next month.
