WE are often accused of not confronting our own mortality in this country.

But a Brighton funeral director is attempting to tackle the problem by offering a coffin with a difference.

Those planning their final send offs can buy the coffin in advance - and then use it as a stylish coffee table.

When the time comes, it can be converted and used as a final resting place.

The Pebblewood Coffin is being offered by the award-winning Arka Original Funerals which has branches in Surrey Street and Islingword Road.

Designed by artist Davina Kemble, the birch ply wood coffin is intended to look natural, rather than the purpose made regular caskets.

It holds the body in a foetal position with the designer describing the look as providing a comforting presence to others with its smooth and tactile curves.

She added that the organic biodegradable material emulates the annular rings of a tree.

Each wooden urn is individually handcrafted.

Cara Mair, from Arka, said: "It is such an incredibly beautiful concept and very eye-catching.

"As in earlier days families would use their blanket boxes as coffins this too, in the modern age allows people to use items that they have loved and used in their home.

"In the more recent past people have used their pre bought coffins as bookshelves or cupboards or as storage containers for clothes under their bed.

"It really does make sense and a unique way of recycling.

"The coffin is beautifully made and before it is needed as a coffin can bring its beauty to day to day living as a coffee table."

For those wishing to use the coffin as a coffee table, a piece of glass sits between the lid and base.

Arka is also offering a smaller Pebblewood Urn for those who wish to be cremated.

Both can currently be seen in the window of the Arka branch in Surrey Street.

The designer will be visiting the branch on Monday to talk about her design.
