A nightclub has been closed immediately after scenes of drunken violence described as the "wild west".

The Trek nightclub in Seaford will be closed from today after Sussex Police applied for an immediate suspension of the club's licence.

Using powers only enforceable in cases of serious crime the club Lewes District Council was ordered to make a decision within 48 hours.

A member of door staff was assaulted and left in danger of losing his sight, neighbours have been forced to sleep in their bathrooms to escape the noise and police had to break up fights of up to 20 drunken revelers brawling in the street.

Jean Irving, Head of Sussex Police Licensing & Public Safety said: "Following an outbreak of violence at the Trek, where a member of the security team received grievous bodily harm injuries from a customer at the premises, Sussex Police took the unusual step of submitting an application for a summary review of the premises licence to the Licensing Authority. This was not an isolated incident, with the severity of the violent incidents and excessive drunkenness related to the Trek progressively increasing."

The club will now remain closed until a full review hearing is heard in October.
