A MURDERER who killed a man in the street with a shotgun after fleeing jail is on the run for the third time.

Mark Ryder gunned down love rival Stuart McCue outside the Valley Social Club in Whitehawk, Brighton, in a killing that shocked the city.

He had been on the run from the police at the time of the murder in 1993, having absconded while on a boat trip to Brighton Marina.

Thirteen years later he escaped again, this time giving prison officers the slip while on a supervised day trip to Cambridge.

For two months the McCue family lived in fear before he was captured in Spain.

Ten years on, he has gone missing for a third time.

The victim's relatives have been contacted by officials to warn them, The Argus understands.

He had been granted leave from prison on licence and it is believed he breached the conditions of his licence by failing to turn up for a roll call.

A source, who asked to remain anonymous, told this newspaper: "A lot of witnesses again are fearful of their safety because it is the third time. Last time he escaped he managed to get to Spain - after that I would have thought they would never have left him out again."

A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice, which is responsible for the Probation Service, said: "Offenders released on licence are subject to a strict set of conditions and can be recalled to custody to serve the rest of their sentence if they breach them.

"When an abscond of this nature takes place, police are immediately notified and are responsible for locating the offender."

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said the male is not missing from Sussex and has not absconded from Sussex.

However, she confirmed the force had been called in to help track Ryder down.

Ryder and McCue had been friends growing up in Whitehawk.

But they fell out in when McCue found out Ryder had been seeing Emma Devoy, the mother of his two young children.

In May 1993, while on the run from police, Ryder tracked down his love rival and shot him at point blank range in broad daylight outside the Valley Social Club.

With McCue on the ground, trying to crawl away, Ryder shot him again to finish him off.

He manage to give police slip following a chase through Brighton, eventually losing them in Cannon Place car park below Churchill Square.

But just days later he was arrested following a tip off and jailed for life.

Anyone who sees Ryder should call 101.

COLD-BLOODED CRIME SHOCKED CITY TO ITS CORE

RYDER looked his former friend in the eye, lowered his pump action shotgun and pulled the trigger three times in quick succession, writes Ben James.

Bleeding heavily, Stuart McCue summoned all the strength he had left and tried to crawl away to safety.

Ryder showed no mercy.

He pointed the shotgun to the ground and delivered the final, fatal round.

It was a crime that shocked Brighton to its core and left a neighbourhood in mourning.

Ryder and McCue had been friends growing up in Whitehawk.

However, it was when serving time together in 1991 – Ryder for theft and McCue for assault – that their relationship fell apart.

McCue found out Ryder had been seeing Emma Devoy, the mother of his two young children.

The men had a fight and were placed in separate areas.

Later that year, Ryder escaped from jail while on a prison boat trip to Brighton Marina.

He lived in hiding but risked his freedom by returning to visit McCue inside.

Accompanied by Emma, Ryder disguised himself as a woman and used a shawl to cover the tattoos on his hands. It is said he engineered the visit to torture McCue with the fact that, not only was Ryder free but he was living with McCue’s former girlfriend and his children.

McCue was released in May 1993 and three weeks later Ryder travelled to Brighton to track him down.

He is said to have gone to the top of a hill and watched over Whitehawk with a telescope.

After a few drinksin backstreet pubs he drove to Whitehawk with friends where he spotted McCue outside the Valley Social Club. He shot him four times before making off in the stolen car.

Family members, including older brother Gary, raced to McCue’s side and tried to stop the bleeding.

Meanwhile police patrol cars and the force helicopter chased the Nissan through the city before Ryder gave them the slip in Cannon Place car park. He was later arrested following a tip off and jailed for life.
