SIX volunteers behind a performing arts festival have celebrated their 80th birthdays.

The octogenarians are involved with Springboard, a music festival in Brighton and Hove that aims to encourage and inspire young performers of all ages in music and drama.

The six helpers were presented with a magnificent cake made by 15-year-old Ursula Eastwood, a Springboard award-winning pianist and trumpeter.

At the meeting two of the volunteers - Linda Bhattacharya and June Ingleton - were also presented with their 50-year service award from the British and International Federation of Festivals by Professor Gavin Henderson.

Prof Henderson, who is principal of the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and Springboard's president, said the festival was "a vital platform for aspiring young musicians and actors".

He said: "I'm delighted to thank this wonderful team of volunteers who are essential to the Festival."

Prof Henderson celebrated his own 50-year anniversary last year.
