VOLUNTEERS tasked with patrolling the Snowdog sculptures have told how much they love their job.

A team of 25 people are helping visitors navigate the public art trail around the city and raise money for The Martlets hospice.

They hand out maps and pass on information about the city, the project and the artists behind each model's design.

They are also in charge of checking on each of the individually-designed models to make sure they have not been damaged.

Wendy Bluck is one of the so-called trail makers, which were inspired by the games makers who helped to make the Olympics a success.

The retired 62-year-old, of Brighton, said the opportunity allows her to combine everything she loves to do.

She said: "I love walking and I love meeting new people. It's really great fun and really interesting.

"It is amazing to see so many people out on the trail. We've met everyone from families, businessmen doing the trail on their lunch break to stag parties determined to track down each dog. Everybody is so positive about it."

Mrs Bluck, who also volunteers on Fridays in The Martlets café, said: "I heard about this because I volunteer for the hospice already. I really wanted to help such a good cause. I help out with one Snowdog shift a week on a Thursday between 11am and 3pm, it's quite flexible. Lots of other volunteers read about it in the paper and had not been involved with the charity before. I think it's really helped the cause."

Philippa Smith found it was just the right focus for her after she left her job and while she looked for another career. As well as being a trail maker two days a week she helps on the charity's pop up Snowdog merchandise stall in Churchill Square.

The 49-year-old, of Brighton, said: "When I gave up my job in state management I wanted to do something different but I didn't really know what. I wanted to see what was out there and take up some volunteering. I used to find I was often away from home and I wanted to spend more time in Brighton and getting to know the city.

"I didn't know anything about the trail beforehand but it has been brilliant. Everyone is totally swept up with the trail which is lovely to see."

The volunteers, and their special uniforms, are sponsored by The Saltroom and The Coal Shed restaurants.

The Martlets are looking for more volunteers to come forward. The ideal candidates are enthusiastic, friendly, helpful and will be happy to march around the streets in all weathers.
