AN ARTS centre has reopened for a season of performances after a nine year refurbishment costing £7.2 million.

The Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts (ACCA) in Falmer which opened as the Gardner Arts Centre in 1969, has reopened after a makeover

Named after former chancellor of the university Richard Attenborough, the centre at the University of Sussex campus aims to uphold the principles championed by the actor and film director; human rights, social justice, creative education and access to the arts for all.

Laura McDermott took over the creative director role at ACCA last November and has had a part to play in both the practical construction of the building and its future vision and identity.

She said that while there were differences between ACCA and the Gardner Arts Centre – primarily that there is more of a link with the university now – it was important to remember the cultural legacy of the latter institution.

“It’s something I’ve certainly thought about a lot. The Gardner Arts Centre was legendary and loved by the community in Brighton and Hove and surrounding areas," she said.

“When I was appointed, lots of people in the arts community told me about their recollections of the strong and distinctive programme the Gardner Arts Centre always had.

“It was one of the few places in Britain where you could see cutting edge and experimental works, and people used to jump on the slam-door train from London to Brighton to come to the centre. That sense of specialness is something I hope we can carry forward.”

A Grade II listed building, ACCA contains a 350-seat auditorium, rehearsal space, a cafe bar and social meeting area. Its autumn and winter season has performances across the arts including theatre, music and dance.

As well as channelling the spirit of the Gardner Arts Centre, McDermott said she was keen to promote the values of Richard Attenborough in her programme.

“He believed a wide range of people should have access to creativity through education. He was also passionate about access to the arts for all.

“On that note, every show has an allocation of tickets available as pay what you decide. You can choose to make a financial donation or not.”
