THE Duke of Edinburgh took in panoramic views of Brighton and Hove as he boarded the i360 today.

He gave the 162 metre tourist attraction the royal seal of approval when he officially opened it this afternoon.

Stepping into the pod and admiring far reaching scenes of the South Downs, the coast and the city below.

Prince Philip was in good spirits as he waved, smiled and joked with the crowd who had gathered on King’s Road to see him.

He spent around an hour and a half meeting staff, talking in detail with the engineers on how the attraction works and chatting to civic leaders.

David Marks, chairman of the i360, said: “His Royal Highness is a fantastic champion of good design in arts and industry and has furthered this cause with energy and passion for more than 50 years. Knowing the Duke of Edinburgh’s love of engineering and innovation, we were absolutely delighted and honoured that he agreed to open British Airways i360 today.”
