A D-DAY hero is to star in a documentary following Second World War veterans on an extraordinary road-trip .

Fred Glover, 91, of Woodingdean, Brighton, features in heart-warming documentary, Return of the Liberators, following the camaraderie and acts of remembrance of veterans as they travel by London black cabs to commemorations in The Netherlands marking the 70th anniversary of the end of the war.

Fred was 18 when he landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, as a soldier in the 9th Battalion Parachute Regiment on June 6 1944. Now the grandfather-of-two hopes the documentary reminds people of sacrifice and the horrors of war.

He said: “All across the Europe are the graves of those people that perished. We had a saying in the regiment, we are veterans, but the heroes are still resting in those cemeteries.

“I was inclined to be anti-war before the war, but suddenly we found ourselves in a situation in what we were fighting was really evil in its worst possible form and I was really glad to be doing something worthwhile.”

Fred was one of 120 Second World War veterans who travelled to The Netherlands, in a convoy of 96 London black cabs, on the trip organised by The London Taxi Benevolent Association for the War Disabled. The charity is run by cabbies and its aim is to work for the benefit of the war disabled and veterans.

Filmmaker and anthropologist Janet Hodgson has been documenting the charity’s work for several years. She said the veterans stories were very moving: “They still have all these incredible memories and connections. Each of the veterans have all been through incredible things.”

Return of the Liberators is to be screened at Acts of Remembrance, an event part of the Economic and Social Research Council’s Festival of Social Science, in St Leonards.

Before the screening a talk will be held by anthropologist Gemma Aellah, and later veterans who appear in the film and cabbies will rally around the piano for some good old-fashioned wartime songs and cockney favourites.

Miss Hodgson added: “ I can’t wait for the screening. It will be fun to see it in the Kino-Teatr, which was bombed during the war, so it has an added pertinence.”
