A MUSICIAN is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Adele and Jessie J after being nominated for a top award.

Rag N Bone Man has received his second high-profile nomination in a week after being included on the Brits Critics' Choice Award shortlist.

The Uckfield-born songwriter, real name Rory Graham, plays a mixture of blues and soul music and is up against singers Dua Lipa and Anne-Marie for the honour.

Graham was also included on the BBC Sound of 2017 longlist on Monday.

Previous winners of the Brits award, which is open to any British artist releasing a debut album in 2017, include Adele, James Bay, Emeli Sande and Jessie J.

This winner will be announced on Thursday.

Graham has released three EPs (shorter records) since 2012 and his debut album Human is out on February 10.

His latest single of the same name was a number one on Itunes chart in 25 countries. The track has already been streamed 45 million times worldwide.

Reacting to his nomination, Graham, 31, said: "It's absolutely bonkers. I've been grafting and I've built a strong fanbase over the years with help from good people that put their faith in me. Now this. I'm very grateful."

Graham developed his craft in Brighton, and specifically at The Hope and Ruin, as a teenager.

The Queen's Road venue used to host a night called Slip-Jam-B for upcoming MCs and hip-hop artists, and Graham became a regular on the local scene.

From this starting point he went on to support touring rappers that visited Brighton as well as once opening up for Joan Armatrading at Brighton Dome.

Taking inspiration from famous blues musicians like Robert Johnson as well as rappers and pop singers, Graham has forged a striking sound.

His often personal lyrics revolve around the themes of love and loss.

He moved away from Sussex briefly and settled in London. However, he has since moved back because he said he couldn't find the space to be creative. He now lives in Ridgewood, near Uckfield.

He said: "I open my back door and there are birds singing, green everywhere – it’s beautiful. I’m 15 minutes away from people in Brighton, too."
