A champion teenage show jumper has been killed in a car crash while on the way to college.

Ella Popely, 18, was driving her Fiat when it collided with an Audi as she made her way to Burgess Hill Girls' School yesterday morning.

The Haywards Heath teenager was a promising showjumper who had competed for the Team GB junior riding squad.

Her father, John, has also represented Great Britain in the sport.

Tributes have started to flood in with friends and family taking to Facebook to pay their respects.

The All England Showjumping Club at Hickstead posted.

It read: "Ella grew up close to Hickstead and was a regular competitor at all our shows.

"She was an intergral part of the extended Hickstead and Bunn Family. Her smile and humour was infectious.

"Our thoughts and condolences go out to all her family and friends at this very sad time. RIP Ella."

Her boyfriend Chris Matthews posted a picture of the pair together with the message "You will forever be in my heart ❤️ I love you."
