A chef is facing extradition from the Netherlands after being arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl at a restaurant in Britain eight years ago.

The 37-year-old man was held by Dutch police after being placed last month on Europol's most-wanted list of suspects this Christmas.

The appeal led to several tip-offs that he was working as a chef at a cafe in Amsterdam, where he was detained under a European Arrest Warrant on December 6.

Sussex Police said the man was wanted on suspicion of sexually assaulting a girl while he was working as a chef at a restaurant in Rye, near Hastings, on August 21, 2008.

He was arrested over the offence but failed to return on his bail date. Police said he was believed to have travelled to Brazil before further intelligence placed him in Portugal or the Netherlands.

Inspector Chris Collins, of Sussex Police, said: "This was a good example of international law enforcement co-operation leading to the arrest of a suspected sex offender."
