A Land Rover was almost destroyed by fire on the A23, partly blocking the busy road.
Three fire engines were sent to the northbound section between Handcross and Pease Pottage at about 3.25pm today.
Crews used a hose to put out the burning vehicle as traffic heading to London ahead of Christmas Day backed up on the carriageway.
A spokeswoman said the vehicle was partially destroyed by fire and the cause was not clear.
Crews left the scene about half an hour later.
