THE man behind a popular nudist club, who loved to be at one with nature, has died.

Hugh Bentley co-founded the Brighton Sun Club in 1959 in Sayers Common, near Hurstpierpoint.

In 1971, the club moved to Scaynes Hill.

The popular naturist club, which was open to families, was renowned for its beautiful setting with gardens, woods, swimming pool, play area and sauna.

At its peak more than 200 people from Sussex were members, with many travelling from across the UK and Europe to holiday there.

Brighton resident Mr Bentley, who was 85 when he died, loved to be at one with nature in the countryside.

His son, Mark Bentley, said: “It was very much a family club about living close to nature.

“He just wanted to provide a beautiful site in Sussex where people could strip off in private if they wanted to and enjoy the countryside in a non-judgemental and relaxed setting.

“It was his vision and even though it was non-profit making, he did it for the love of it.”

Born in London in 1931, Mr Bentley grew up in Littlehampton and worked as technician at Sussex University alongside running the Brighton Sun Club.

The club was sold in 2004 when he retired.

He moved to Brighton where he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He leaves his partner of 45 years Pauline, sons Mark and Neil, and three grandchildren.
