A CAR which killed a man in a hit-an-run failed to pull over for police officers when ordered to do so, an initial investigation has found.

Jonos Sasvari, 78, was killed after he was struck by a Vauxhall Astra at the junction of St James’ Street and Old Steine, Brighton, at around 10pm on Tuesday January 10.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said initial indications are that the driver of the Vauxhall failed to stop when signalled to do so by Sussex Police officers in a marked vehicle on Bear Road.

The police vehicle began to follow the Vauxhall, which travelled on towards the Brighton seafront and collided with Mr Sasvari.

A second Sussex Police car arrived at the scene of the collision shortly afterwards and attempted first aid on the injured man, however he was pronounced dead at the scene, the IPCC said.

An independent investigation is underway into the circumstances of the police involvement.

A spokeswoman said: "IPCC investigators would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the incident or the events leading up to it, particularly what they might recall about police activity."

Witnesses or anyone with information should contact the IPCC on 0800 151 0020 or email oldsteinertc@ipcc.gsi.gov.uk

IPCC investigators will also be at the scene of the incident tonight from 9:30pm seeking to speak to anyone who may have witnessed events last Tuesday.

Two men handed themselves in to police following the hit-and-run.

A 33-year-old man, from Brighton, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, drink driving, failing to stop for police and failing to report an accident.

A 35-year-old man, also from Brighton, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, drink driving, failing to stop for police and failing to report an accident.

The pair were bailed by Sussex Police until next month.
