A DRIVER crashed his car after speeding off from police.

Officers spotted a black Volkswagen Golf in West Chiltington Lane near Billingshurst which they attempted to pull over.

Having followed the car, they lost sight of it and later found it on its roof just off the A281 about a mile north of Henfield.

The incident happened at around 7.50pm on Thursday (January 19).

A 22-year-old man from Brighton was found nearby and arrested on suspicion of burglary, possession of cannabis, failing to stop for police and dangerous driving.

He was taken to hospital as a precaution where he remained overnight.

A Sussex Police spokesman said :"It is believed there was at least one other person in the Golf.

"Despite a thorough search of the area, which included the police helicopter, nobody else was found near the scene."

Detective constable Jamie Carruthers of Sussex Police, added: "We are keen to make sure that any other occupants of the VW Golf are ok.

"If you recognise the description of the car and perhaps saw it driving in the area on Thursday, then I would ask you to please get in touch.

"Any information, no matter how insignificant you may think it is, could prove really useful to us."

Witnesses should contact Sussex Police via email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk, use the online form at sussex.police.uk/contact-us/response-to-appeal or call 101, quoting serial 1088 of January 19.
