A NEW grassroots movement has brought together groups opposed to Brexit and the Government’s triggering of Article 50.

Brighton and Hove for Europe is campaigning against Britain leaving the EU following the referendum result in June and is looking to ease tension between Remainers and Brexiteers.

By 9.30am tomorrow the Supreme Court will deliver the ruling on whether Theresa May has the power to trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty using the royal prerogative.

The Rev Susie Courtault, an interfaith minister and member of Brighton and Hove for Europe, said regular meetings have been positive.

She said: “We meet now once a month at a stall outside the Unitarian Church to campaign, talk and encourage those who are unhappy about the way in which things are going and the possibility of losing rights and access to markets.

“The referendum divided the country and families and those who think the EU is a good thing both for business, for young people, and peace are still upset and devastated.

“We are doing what we can to resist a hard Brexit and it is good to know that two MPs in the area support our cause.

“We want our country to stay open to all people, of all cultures, who want to come here.”

In December the event A Silent Chain For Europe brought three campaign groups from the city together into Brighton and Hove for Europe.

Ms Courtault said that they are also looking at how to talk to those who voted leave and are trying to address their differences.

Petra Kopp, of Brighton and Hove for Europe, said: “With the aid of a megaphone we have transformed a corner of Brighton into a pro-Europe ‘speakers corner’, informing people about EU rights, promoting love and solidarity against petty nationalism and racism, and warning people about the consequences of Brexit.

“We are currently supporting a number of petitions, from asking our MPs not to vote to trigger Article 50, to requesting associate citizenship for UK citizens, to demanding a right to remain for the EU citizens who currently live in the UK.”

The group also supports national pro-Europe demonstrations and events and travelled to London on Saturday to take part in the Women’s March, an anti-Trump protest.

Organisers will continue to host mini-rallies and stalls every Saturday from noon to 2pm outside the Unitarian Church in, New Road, Brighton.
