A PUB landlord has is planning to open up an Austrian-style boozer claiming English pubs have lost their charm.

John Szewczuk is hoping to put the oompa back into Brighton and Hove’s watering holes saying “breweries have ruined traditional pub life”.

Bradford-born John - who moved to Austria aged ten - said he is hoping to bring some of the Alpine charm of Wiener Schnitzel and Viennese coffee houses to our bars.

John, who opened an English themed- pub called Johnny’s in Austria, wants to launch a chain of sausages and schnapps bars, starting in Brighton and Hove.

He said: "Austria offers a great variety of fine food which is not very common to the UK and which is very much appreciated by our British customers in Austria. The range of Austrian cakes and pastries is amazing.

"In our opinion most English pubs nowadays miss the relaxed and cosy atmosphere which they used to offer.

"Many pubs in this country have moved away from being an informal meeting place offering simple dishes in an atmosphere like at home. N

"owadays pubs often bill themselves as exquisite restaurants which makes them lose their charm.”

“Although major breweries stress their family-friendliness their major concern apparently is to sell as much beer as possible.”

However pubs industry experts said the couple were foolish to condemn the quality of the watering holes on offer in Brighton and Hove.

James Wallin of pub trade magazine MCA said: "I’m surprised that having moved to this part of the world he hasn’t been impressed by the sheer breadth and quality of the pub offers in Brighton.

"There doesn’t seem to be anything in his suggested model that isn’t already available here in buckletloads.

“John has obviously been away from the UK for a long time so it’s understandable that his view of the Great British Pub is still stuck in the 1980s.

"Pubs remain affordable places to eat and drink quality British-made produce and have more character in their right snug than an identikit Austrian beer house.

"I wish John all the best with his schnitzel - and if his aim is to create a pub where he’s a) not going to be concerned about selling lots of beer and b) not matching restaurants on food, he’s going to need it.”

John is looking for an investor to help set up the chain and find premises for a schnapps distillery and a number of freehold bars.
