A CHARITY is calling on cyclists to attempt to ride around the world – in just 12 hours.

Brighton Housing Trust is to host the fundraising challenge at Preston Park Velodrome.

Cyclists of all ages will take to their bikes to attempt to collectively cycle 66,792 laps of the track during the 12 hour trial.

Pete West, mayor of Brighton and Hove, and his driver Robert Robinson launched the fundraising effort on their tandem.

The event will take place on June 25 and the lap target is equal to the distance around the world.

The event, which starts at 7am, aims to raise £25,000 to help First Base Day Centre continue its support for about 1,000 people every year.

The money raised will go towards providing food, health services and laundry facilities. The cash will also help fund advice to help people find accommodation and employment.

Simon Hughes, manager of First Base, said: “Every single person who takes part in the Around the World Cycle challenge will be helping us to make a real difference to the lives of people who need our services.

“It was with the support of the community that last year we were able to help 306 people to move off the streets.”

The event has various cycling slots for children and adults. Hand cyclists and adapted bicycles will also be able to take part. For those who cannot make it to the track there is an option to take part on an exercise bike.

Prizes will be awarded for achievements such as the most laps completed and most sponsorship raised.

Registration costs £10 for adults and £5 for children. Visit justgiving.com/campaigns/charity/brightonhousingtrust/aroundtheworldcycle2017.
